Background of the Study
Disease surveillance systems are essential for detecting and monitoring outbreaks, informing public health policies, and guiding responses to emerging health threats. In Nigeria, the effectiveness of disease surveillance has been a critical factor in controlling infectious diseases like Lassa fever, cholera, and COVID-19. Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has a growing population, and its health system faces challenges in disease detection, reporting, and response. Despite efforts to improve disease surveillance, there are gaps in the efficiency, timeliness, and coverage of reporting mechanisms, which can delay interventions and exacerbate outbreaks. This study aims to appraise the effectiveness of the disease surveillance system in Gombe State and identify key challenges to its success.
Statement of the Problem
The disease surveillance system in Gombe State, while active, faces significant challenges such as insufficient funding, lack of training for healthcare personnel, and limited infrastructure. These issues hinder timely reporting and data collection, which are essential for effective public health interventions. As a result, the state remains vulnerable to outbreaks of infectious diseases that could otherwise be prevented or contained with a more robust surveillance system. This study seeks to assess the performance of the disease surveillance system in Gombe State and recommend improvements for better disease control.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of the disease surveillance system in Gombe State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by the disease surveillance system in Gombe State.
3. To propose recommendations for improving the effectiveness of disease surveillance in Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. How effective is the disease surveillance system in detecting and controlling infectious diseases in Gombe State?
2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of the disease surveillance system in Gombe State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the disease surveillance system in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. The disease surveillance system in Gombe State is not sufficiently effective in timely detection and response to infectious disease outbreaks.
2. Insufficient funding and inadequate training are major challenges to the effectiveness of disease surveillance in Gombe State.
3. Improving surveillance system infrastructure and training will significantly improve disease control efforts in Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the disease surveillance systems operating in Gombe State's healthcare facilities, especially at the community and primary health levels. It will examine the reporting mechanisms, data accuracy, and response times. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing complete data from remote health facilities and underreporting of cases.
